About the Event
Americans relocating to Portugal remain subject to a complex and often misunderstood set of U.S. and Portuguese tax obligations. This introductory workshop is designed to clarify the fundamentals, helping individuals navigate dual compliance with clarity and confidence.
We will begin with an overview of continuing U.S. tax filing obligations, including how residency abroad affects standard deadlines, filing thresholds, and informational reporting requirements. The session will also explain Portugal’s framework for tax residency and the taxation of worldwide income, as well as how common income categories such as wages, retirement benefits, capital gains, and rental income are treated under each system.
Special attention will be paid to common traps that catch even well-advised taxpayers off guard, such as passive foreign investment companies (PFICs), foreign pension treatment mismatches, and missed reporting on foreign financial assets.
This session is appropriate for Americans planning a move to Portugal, those recently arrived, and professionals advising them on tax or financial matters.
